Biography
Atlanta Georgia has always been fertile ground for nurturing greatness. Whether the elixir that produces greatness is in the air, water, or earth, Lady Atlanta from her bosom nurses, from her heart nurtures, and from her essence cultivates the splendor of her children. Ohio, however; is not without her own line up of American heroes like Neil Armstrong, inventors like the Wright Brothers, and icons like Dorothy Dandridge and Halle Berry. Bundled with the same ingenuity as her predecessors, Gia Jai brings packed in suitcases of her soul the Ohio musical influences such as the Ohio Players, Roger Troutman (inventor of the talk box), Tracy Chapman, Isley Brothers, Bootsy Collins, and Bone Thugs and Harmony. Of their artist children, Lady Atlanta and Madame Ohio indeed spent ample time fashioning, Artist, Lyricist, Songwriter, Producer, and Performer Gia Jai.
Although Gia Jai (pronounced gee-ya-jay), is a native of Dayton, Ohio where her sound was developed, she grew up all over including Birmingham, UK which gives her an unexampled international appeal. She settled in Atlanta in 2004 were her sound was nurtured, by way of Virginia Beach, Virginia where her lyrical style took form.
Though a transplant, Gia Jai has made ATL her home as Atlanta has embraced her as her own. The eldest of three siblings she was saddled with responsibility at a very early age. Dealing with adult issues and pressures as a minor is what gives this talented performer the soul of the ancients. Her music is riddled with wisdom beyond her years, yet is easily conveyed to the listener whatever the level of understanding or station, there is something in it for every one. As a female Hip Hop artist in a male dominated industry, Gia Jai brings a new brand of femininity. Gia, from the goddess of earth Gaia and Jai, meaning victorious one, is the sum of her substance. A Femme Fatal whose awareness of self gives her the ability to maintain the balance of divinity and humanity. True sacred femininity.
Such a balance is no better demonstrated in The Gourmet Chocolate (a celebration of the liberation), from her first album cleverly titled Untitled. The lyric, Im purely something you can trust, these other girls just cut too much, will tantalize the brain with higher intellect while the next line, which makes them one, two, three ounces just not dope enough, will sucker punch you with bittersweet realism. The melodic rhythm of first seduction and then masochistic entrapment is paired with booty grinding beats that would make the most successful artist salivate. As this well thought formula is hidden and revealed from song to song, instead of getting stale, it gains velocity through simple complexity.
As Gia Jai's art imitates her life, she has many irons in the fire. In addition to having finished her first album Untitled that is on her own label ALAI (Artist, Life, and Industry) Entertainment which she produced the vocals and is promoting in the musical underground arena, Gia Jai is in production of two videos soon to be released. In addition, she has received her formal training in ballet, modern, jazz, salsa, and hip- hop. She has also trained and performed with Alvin Alley Dance Company.
While writing and producing for other up and coming artist, she is already in the studio recording her next album dropping in Jan of 2010. Stay tuned for she will undoubtedly become a household name.
